NBBF ELECTIONS: INTEGRITY QUESTIONS EMERGE AS ALLEGATIONS SURFACE AGAINST CURRENT BOARD MEMBER.
ASIO is monitoring allegations against a current NBBF Board member made by a former employee, include alleged financial impropriety and workplace conduct. While ASIO has not independently verified the allegations, their seriousness warrants proper scrutiny, evidence and due process, particularly as the NBBF elections approach.
As preparations intensify ahead of the forthcoming Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) elections, questions surrounding transparency, accountability and personal conduct are beginning to attract attention within the basketball community.
ASIO has become aware of allegations being circulated publicly involving a current member of the NBBF Board, who also holds a portfolio on the board relating to sponsorship and marketing and is reportedly associated with a prospective electoral campaign ahead of the federation's forthcoming leadership contest.
The allegations made publicly by a former female employee (Lereeq) of an organisation (AFA Sports) associated with the official concern claims of financial impropriety of an alleged loan obtained through the former employee's account without her informed consent and allegations concerning the nature of the relationship between the two individuals.
At this stage, these remain allegations and have not been independently established by ASIO.
THE FORMER EMPLOYEE'S CLAIMS
The former employee has reportedly used social media platforms to express her grievances over events she says occurred during her employment.
Among the claims being circulated are allegations that financial obligations were incurred in her name through the use of her account, leaving her responsible for repaying a loan she says she did not knowingly authorise.
There are also allegations concerning an intimate relationship between the former employee and the organisation's principal.
ASIO has not independently verified these claims, and no conclusion should be drawn regarding criminal, civil or professional liability without appropriate evidence and due process.
However, allegations of this nature cannot simply be dismissed when they involve an individual occupying a position of responsibility within a national sporting federation particularly at a time when that individual is connected to the political process surrounding the federation's next election.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO NIGERIAN BASKETBALL.
Leadership positions in sport come with responsibilities that extend beyond the basketball court.
Board members of national federations are entrusted with responsibilities involving athletes, coaches, staff, sponsors, partners and other stakeholders. Questions concerning financial accountability, workplace conduct and the treatment of employees therefore have a legitimate place in any discussion about governance and integrity.
This is especially relevant during an election period.
The NBBF election process should not be reduced solely to questions of personalities, alliances or electoral mathematics. Candidates and those supporting them should also be prepared to answer legitimate questions concerning governance, transparency, accountability, professional conduct and ethical standards.
Where serious allegations are made, the appropriate response should be a transparent process capable of establishing the facts rather than allowing rumours, social media claims or counterclaims to determine the narrative.
THE NEED FOR EVIDENCE AND DUE PROCESS
ASIO believes that allegations must be treated seriously without automatically being treated as proven facts.
The former employee has the right to make complaints and present whatever evidence she believes supports her claims.
The official concerned equally has the right to respond to the allegations and present evidence in his defence.
Where appropriate, relevant authorities should be allowed to examine matters relating to financial transactions, employment records, communications and any other evidence capable of establishing what actually occurred.
If there was wrongdoing, the facts should be established and the appropriate accountability mechanisms activated.
If the allegations are demonstrably unfounded, that should also be established through evidence and due process.
What should not happen is for serious allegations to disappear simply because the person involved occupies an influential position within Nigerian basketball.
ASIO IS WATCHING
With the Nigerian Basketball Federation elections approaching, ASIO.org is watching the proceedings closely.
Our interest is not in supporting or opposing any candidate, faction or political camp. Our interest is the integrity of the process and the standards expected of individuals seeking or holding positions of responsibility within Nigerian sports.
As the election approaches, ASIO will continue to monitor publicly available information, documented allegations, responses from relevant parties and developments that may have implications for governance, transparency, accountability and sporting integrity.
The Nigerian basketball community deserves an election process in which questions can be asked openly, evidence can be examined fairly and leadership is subjected to appropriate standards of accountability.
ASIO will continue watching.
